Having had BMWs for many a year, I have always had to "make do" with used vehicles. This time however we have been lucky enough to be able to afford a brand new 1.
As my partner doesn't like "big" cars then anything other than the 1 was going to be too big. I too think the latest gen 3 series are bloated whales compared to the original designs.
When you take a 1 series it is roughly the same size as an old E30. As we have a couple of these and my partner considers these small cars then the battle was won.

Trading in a 21mth old GP Tjet 120 then Fiat had done me no favours over the period by marketing hard and undermining any residual value our car had. This is even though the car had only done 5800 miles.

This then limited our choice of 1 series but having tried both the 118d and 116d in normal operations then there was little if any difference noticed.

The big attraction has been the fuel consumption and the road tax of only £35 a year.

Anyway hello world to one of only a handful of red 1 series I have so far seen.

It was oredered with factory towbar; bluetooth (which comes with a radio upgrade) and cruise control.
Noone can tell me why BMW insist on run flat tyres with a towbar option as the 1 series doesn't have a spare even when fitted with "normal" tyres.

Being a Sport model it came with sports seats, front fogs and a multi function steering wheel as well as 17" alloys.
I also persuaded the dealer to throw in F&R flaps FOC, as I like them on a car.

Looking through the accessory brochure today I see just a couple of mods so far; a full chrome grille and an exhaust trim.
Apart from that it looks like staying std until 3 years time when a remap may be in order to release a few more horses from the 2litre engine.

I'm sure it will go to a few shows this coming year, mainly as support for the 323i.

Mike - good choice and nice purchase...I do like these cars and very 'fit for purpose'....not cheap but you will see a good residual Vs the Fiat

Are you planning to concours a new car...surely not ;-)

Concours this one? It does go against my own thoughts of showing new cars as they are so easy to clean and prepare.

Maybe in a few years time though..........

The 1 is no more........

Thanks to a drop or two of French rain the car has been totalled. It didn't like swimming with water up to the windscreen.

Now the insurance and things to sort now we are back in the UK.

Happy holidays

The vehicle emerges from the depths...........

Oh my good lord - thats not what I call a good trip to France

Will the salvage be brought back to the UK - will be repairable but will take a while to dry out - and likely to need a new loom to be safe - guess it will go back on the road but worth little in France...how deep was it

The insurance company have already agreed tp replace the car on a like for like. The "old one", with just 1100 miles on the clock, will be sold as salvage in France. They reckoned it was going to cost them £1500 for repatriation on top of the loom, complete interior, new exhaust, brakes etc  etc etc. It was less than 6mths old.
The water where the picture is only went to bonnet badge level at its highest. The other side of the road and the cars were submerged totally.
Still, over 25 people have so far died in the aftermath of the floods. What's another car compared to life.

The new car should be at my dealer in late August/early Sept.

Mike - true I was not aware people had died...so guess you are happy to get home in one piece

I would have been interested in the salvage - but will be tricky to track down in France now

Still keeping those panels for you when you are passing by

It is at ESD recovery on the N7 at Roquebrune sur Argent, near Frejus. LV are the insurers if you are interested.

Well after waiting a little less than originally promised, the new 1 arrived with me today
Slightly different to the original but generically the same vehicle. Hopefully this one has a stronger aversion to water than the last one.

No, the plate was transferred over from the swimming model.

Today it is now in bits with the whole of the underside trays removed. This is so I can put paint on where BMW can't be bothered to do so, like the inner side of the wheel arch lip or indeed the whole of the inner rear arches

Well the car is now complete. It has the chrome grilles, exhaust trim, mudflaps, u/bonnet insulation and the whole of the underside painted and/or waxoyled.

I have also replaced the front caliper carriers as the acid cleaner from PDI had marked the finish on both. The dealer very kindly picked up the tab for the replacements.

Having been to France and lost one car this year - guess where our next holiday is planned for Sept - near Boscastle - ohhh nooooo.
I'll just have to find high ground to park on.

Dan116i - thanks for the thumbs up.
I do prefer red as a colour and on the three door 1 it does look good.
The last one had the black window surround and I wasn't so keen on that. That is why I paid the extra this time for the chrome and to my eyes it improves the look.

Mind you I do have a liking for chrome- I'm not into the shadow look or whatever it's called.

I want the chrome too. But as far as i know you cant get the chrome window surround for a five door, just that shadow surround which im not keen on. Tho now seeing the chrome grille on your car im going to make an order for that.

Dan116i - yes looking through the option lists there doesn't seem to be the option for chromeline on a 5 door. Don't know why though.

The grilles lift the drab grille and depending on the age of your car, perhaps you can think about the chrome tail pipe. Mind you BMW don't exactly go overboard with a high chrome finish on it, so I shall be taking it away to my chroming people next week to have it done properly.
I hope to have it done in time for Ragley Hall on the 5th Sept.

Are you going - I shall be there with the 1 and my 323.

Only seen one 1 series in concours so far, so mine will amke No 2 anyway.

Im affraid i wont be at Ragley Hall. Its abit far for me as i come from Kent. Im the only 1 series that enters the south east concours, its not really a car people use for concours (for some reason)

Ragley Hall

No other 1 present in the show. There was a saloon there belonging to one of the judges, but that was all.
