Hi Guy's,

I wonder if anybody can help me out here. My warranty has just ran out, well January 22nd, and I've just noticed that I appear to have water ingress in one of my rear light clusters. Searching around the WEB it appears to be quite a common problem on 59 plate E89 Z4s cars and most of them have been repaired under warranty.
Now, as I think BMW are aware of this issue I'm trying to get them to do mine FOC but when I went to my local dealer I was told as my cars warranty had expired I would need to book the car in at my expense and then if any work needed to be done they would seek a good will repair from BMW to cover some of the costs BUT I would still need to pay £150 what ever.

I phoned BMW customer support and was told virtually the same story but the thing that really annoyed me was the women on the phone said BMW don't listen to issues talked about on the WEB, as if they don't exist, and even if there was a problem then it would be classed as a leak and these are not covered under warranty anyway.

So, does anybody know any official BMW report number, sorry I don't know the exact term, but it's one of those memos they put to their dealerships regarding known faults that I can quote in any more communications with BMW?

I dont suppose I'll get anywhere but it's worth a go.

Regards

Barry

When my Z3 was still under its New Car Warranty it began leaking at the junction of the hood and screen corners I was told by BMW's idiot SW Zone Manager that 'It's a convertable Sir - you must expect a few leaks!'

What a crowd of cowboys!  Would they say that to someone who had bought a £60,000 Alpina convertable?

I was told by my local BMW MAIN DEALER in 1999 that there was no problem with VANOS units on E36 3 lITRE M3,s, a month after my BMW warrenty ran out. I didn,t get any goodwill payment off them either. It seems to me after many years of BMW ownership that BMW just BURY there head in the SAND whenever they like and most of the time they get away with it...

Looking at the BMW Service Instruction - in which they tell dealers what is wrong with BMWs, and what the cure is  - there are a lot of cases where the dealers are instructed NOT to rectify the problem except in the case of repeated customer complaints!

Don't expect wonderful customer service fom BMW unles you obediently buy a new car every few years, and pay a fortune to have menial jobs done by a dealer - those days are gone.

Sad reading. I've had a lot of niggles and some major issues with my e89. Water in lamp clusters being one of them. I've had four sets on the car now, the latest were done under goodwill as they were not covered under the insured warranty as it was classed as a leak. What a load of tosh. I just argued, as I do, and got them replaced FOC in the end. Thanks BMW, but how about a) making them right in the first place and b) not making me fight for fixes I shouldn't have on a premium car in the first place.

So, the moral of this sad story is........ don't buy new from a stealer, buy used from an indie after all the faults have been fixed, and then have it serviced by the indie.
Cats know your every thought.

But don't care.

Water in a tail lamp is annoying, not a major problem, and can be fixed by DIY if you take it to bits, look hard, and use common sense.  BMW no loger have any goodwill towards customers, so it is a waste of time to hope that they will ignore the letter of their warranty contract.

If you really want to hear a BMW horror story, read on the web about peoplke who bought the 120d and later 320d, where timing chain problems need to be resolved by a major engine strip, and in some cases a new crankshaft.  BMW do not want to know, and the problem is a major expense because some German Genius decided to put the timing chain at the back of the engine . . .

We had thought about buying a 123d, but I now have no confidence in either BMW design or their after-sales (and after warranty) service.  We'll stick with the Golf TDI, which after 14 years and almost 200,000 miles is reliable, goes like a 3 litre petrol car, does 55-60 mpg, and has only cost about £2k to keep going.

Mind you, my 2.8 Z3 has covered over 130,000 miles, and has only cost about £100 to keep going!

So much for progress!

A Z3 is not just for Christmas - it's for life!
