Looking at the 2009 open class judging sheet found in the members area of this website, it asks for registration year. That shouldn't leave much doubt then to the person filling it in.

It asks on the form for build year and registration year and can be confusing - my old E30 was a '90 build with a '92 registration.
Always use the date of first registration, when it comes to concours classes or the DVLA. On the showfield the actual build year can be a rarely used joker that is used to split two otherwise equal cars. |

If I read this correctly you were swapped into a group of older cars. Other things being equal, that to me would suggest you'd be at an advantage. But isn't the real point that it's all about the taking part rather than the winning!

No, what actually happened was a newer car that had for the previous two years been in group J dropped into group I and won the group. In previous years we had gone off registration date, but this year it was changed to build date.

You are quite right, at least in my view. I didn't even get a place in my group but hey, I had a good day and showed off my car.
![]() All people judge differently. I judged two groups on the day and many owners would probably not agree with some of my decisions.
We do sometimes have difficulty understanding some of the judges decisions eg. on my car I have just had all the wheels professionally refurbished a month ago, and new tyres fitted, they had been cleaned to within an inch of their lives but I lost three points on them, I cannot understand why but maybe there is something I don't know about that I need to find out about and do better next time.
