Some good campsites which may be of interest to anyone coming or going, and all are handy for those travelling to or from the le Mans 24-hours.
Calais - Please note that the campsite - which was open all year - was closed on my last visit, and is no longer listed in the Calais website - I will check on it when next visiting Calais. the camping municipal is large and well-equipped, sited on the opposite side of the water from the ferryport. There is no restaurant, but there are about five of various types within 50 metres of the gate. From the A26 Calais/Boulogne autoroute exit at Sortie 43 signed to Bleriot Plage. Go straight on at 4(?) roundabouts, until you reach a 'T' roundabout where you cannot go straight on. At this point take the first exit (ie to the right) towards the Bleriot Plage beach. The entry to the campsite is a sharp turning on the right, about 50 metres after the roundabout. If you miss it, turn round at the next roundabout, and circumnavigate the 'T' roundabout to returrn. Some internet sites complain about noise from the ferries, but it did not worry me in my tent. Poix-le-Picardie - a small town about 25 miles SW of Amiens, easily reached frm the A29 Amiens/Rouen autoroute. Follow the road to the town centre, and at the end of the square, with the Hotel le Cardinal on the R, take the road to the L of the market building. The campsite is about 200 metres further on the right, past the supermarket. Again, it does not have a restaurant, but the brasserie of the Hotel le Cardinal is good value. Neufchatel-en-Bray - A small town to the S of the A28 Abbeville-Rouen autoroute. Exit at sortie 9, to the W of the town, and follow the road to a lagre junction, where the campsite is signed to the L. Take extreme care as you drive along this road, as what looks to be a straight-on road with a junction to the right is actually a bend of the road tothe right, with a minor road joining it on the left! In other words, go straight on at this point, but remember that you are actually turning left, off the main road! The campsite is on the left, about 100 metres later, and has excellent facilites. Bread and croissants etc can be ordered at reception, and there is a really good restaurant at sensible prices. Other Campsites: Chartres - The camping municipal is large and well-equipped, but does not have a restaurant. However, it is an easy walk along the river bank to a footbridge, which delivers you into the old city, where you will find some good restaurants. From the N154 Chartres ring road, look for a point where the N154 runs alongside the A11 autoroute. Just after a railway crossing there is a roundabout, from which the N154 is the first exit, passing under the autoroute and signed for Orelans. At this roundabout take the 3rd ? exit (go left) into the city. Follow it downhill and look for the campsite signs to the left. It is not far. If travelling north on the N154 from Orleans, pass under the autoroute to the roundabout, then go straight on and down the hill to the campsite. St. Yrieix-la-Perche: Large and excellent camping municipal on the outskirts of town, about 20 miles S of Limoges in a revamped china clay pit, once the source of Kaolin for the Limoges porcelain industry, and now the ‘Basin des Losiers’ a lake, campsite, equestrian and cycling area. Well signed from the town centre and approaches, with excellent toilets and a good restaurant. Noisey at night however, due to the ‘Froglings’ on their little scooters, which buzz around the area until about midnight. Exit A20 at Sortie 39 via Pierre-Buffiere and follow the D704.
