If your car is prior to 2001, then you are not allowed to drive it in many towns and cities in Germany.
They have "zones" where they try to reduce pollution by not allowing certain types of vehicles into the area. See http://www.tuv-nord.com/en/emissions-sticker/faq-questions-about-environmental-stickers-8771.htm for full details. I regularly travel in Germany, so I applied to TUV for stickers for my two likely to visit cars.To be safe, I sent them also gas test certificates for my (LPG Powered728) and my 1990 M6, which has no catalyst fitted. Both came back within a few days with Green stickers for about £28 each. Possibly an oversight by TUV as I could not get one for my 1988 635 at a BMW Dealer in Germany, or perhaps the M6, which had less than 27K miles on the clock was just a clean engine. Even brand new cars need a sticker, so be prepared to be stopped at a checkpoint if you do not have one. Warnings are posted on motorways so you have no excuse if you turn off into a green zone. Last time I was there, I caught a camera flash, but never got any notification. Perhaps my Irish number plate helped there? Travel safely! ![]() |

Surprised you had to pay as much as £28 per car
![]() Since these green laws have come in I have visited the first German BMW dealer I encounter, they have been quite happy to issue a green sticker for 5 euros. Have certified four Alpinas so far. |

The TuV website quotes 12.5 euro per car. Still a nice earner for doing nothing!

As mentioned previously, if you go direct to a BMW dealer in Germany it is only 5 euros.

The cost was for being issued it in this country, and included postage + a charge for exchanging the pounds into Euros, and sending me an invoice after the goods were delivered. It was about three years ago that I bought them, so perhaps the increasing numbers required will have dropped the charge. Problem with the "first dealer " approach is that dealers usually have city center spots, and many of these are in a green zone. It would have been my luck to get caught before I found the dealer, so I made sure by paying a bit extra. As it costs me about £800 round trip to go to Essen and back on the ferry, £28 is not much for peace of mind. I agree that it is a lot cheaper at a dealer's but a BMW Dealer would not have given me a green sticker for my 1990 M6, as he would have been better informed about its lack of anti pollution gear. |

I drove into Munich in my non catalyst 1989 730i 5 years ago when there were restrictions. Never heard a thing - ignorance was bliss!

If you are getting stickers there are 3 types of stickers, red, yellow and green. It is dependant on the emissions that your car kicks out and for german registered cars that is registered in the log book. If you want to find out about which zone has this regulation then you can go here and find out. Not all cities have these yet so I guess for foreign cars the regulation isn't as strict. As I say, check the list and you can see what cities have these "Umweltzonen" in place.
Also, should you be interested then you can go on this site and find out what cars meet which criteria. http://www.stuttgart.de/item/show/192660 - bear in mind, it is in German, so if you need to find out anything, let me know I can translate it for you. Or just open it up in Google Chrome and it should Autotranslate. thanks Phil |
