If you are travelling from the Britanny area (such as having used the Roscoff ferry) and are heading towards the Pyrenees/ Dordogne/Mediterranean area, but want a more intereesting route than battling around the Bordeaux area and the boredom of the A10 autoroute, you may be interested in our usual route:

Turn off the A10 at St. Jean d'Angely, and follow the D 939 through Angouleme to Perigueux, where you pick up the D 6089 towards Bordeaux to the A89 to bypass the city before re-joing the 'D' roads again.  The Angouleme ring road can be busy, but even so it is a shorter and quicker route than following the autroutes, and far more interesting:

A10 Sortie 34                Exit to St. Jean d’Angely

Leaving St. Jean d’Angely –signs for Angouleme to D939 (Angouleme)

Large Leclerc on R for coffee/toilet/snack stop

Angouleme – follow signs for Perigueux  N10 (Bordeaux)

exit to D1000 (Bordeaux - Cognac - Perigueux)

Follow road around city –past exits to Bordeaux and Cognac

                                         exit to D939 (Brantome-Perigueux)

Good coffee/snack/toilet stop at  Aire signposted off roundabout approx  20 miles S of Angouleme

               D939                  Brantome area

NB:  some of the roundabout exit signs are inaccurate

                                          Follow D939 (Perigueux)

Perigueux        Large roundabout – first exit D6089   (Bordeaux)

                                      Join A89 (Sarlat - Brive-la-Gaillard)

        A89                        Exit at Sortie16

('Perigueux Est' – signed for Sarlat and  Aire du Manoire services)

Good coffee stop at first exit on first roundabout just after the services - far nicer than the service area.
