If you have a defective tyre which is still under pressure, DO NOT carry it on the passenger's lap unless it has been totally depressurised.
A case occurred last year when a Z3 tyre which had developed an 'egg' was being carried on the passenger's legs, with the damaged area facing the passenger's face. The damaged area blew out, the resultant rush of high pressure air causing fatal injuries to the passenger's lungs. So - carry a valve cap of the type with a key for removing the valve, or use a match etc to hold the valve down until the tyre is depressurised. Perhaps this is why in the Z3 Owners Handbook BMW are non-committal about what to do with a 'dead' wheel after fitting the emergency spare. Edited by Mike Fishwick - 08 Mar 2012 at 12:53pm |
