    Posted: 29 Sep 2009 at 1:51pm
I have a worn suspension bush on the top arm on the nsr suspension on my 840ci.
i have been told by my independant that the bush is not available on its own and complete steel arm is only available from BMW.(at cost of £187 +vat)
Said i would have a look to source cheaper or alternative.

Any suggestions on a cheaper source ?
OR
Anyone used alternative bushes ?

Hi Bern

I have done most of the bushes on my 850, If it is the top wish bone that connects to the top wheel hub joint then you do have to change the arm.
are you sure that the bush has gone at the other end, and its not the wheel hub ball joint the other end.
If you do need a new arm try Motormec in Lowestoft on 01502 500590, they can definately get those parts which are generally lemforder brand that are just as good as oe parts.
If you do change the arm mark the position of the bolt at the bush end as it is an eccentric bolt. these are used to adjust the wheel alinement when doing 4wheel alinement.

Thanks Nigel
I contacted Phoenix Motorsports (Mobile 07836 796921)
who i was introduced to at Santa Pod by Rob750, who has ordered some Powerflex bushes for these arms.
After testing, he hopes to be able to offer exchange arms , fitted with Powerflex bushes, early next year.
As mine is not urgent, i will wait for his to be available.
Thanks for the contact at Lowestoft.

In reality it should be --
540 (well it was before Alpina got hold of it)
740
and now 840.
three different versions of the same V8 engine in three (no -four) cars on our drive,
(the other two cars on the drive have versions of the 6 cyl engine !)

I did resist getting the more readily available 850 !

Spoke to Phoenix Motorsport last week for update.
Powerflex have put the development programme back a bit to concentrate on supplying more lucrative Subura demand.
These bushes now expected to be available next year, and yes, Phoenix are hoping to supply rear upper arms with Powerflex as exchange, but, they only have a couple of spares at the moment. Anyone got any old arms that have been taken off cars?

HI bern
I have just read the artcle in BMW car mag
the article on Peter Rice's Alpina B12 8 series states that all of the suspension bushes are polyurethane. do you know if this is a fact,? and if it is where did he get the bushes. I know that you can get some by ordering E34 and E32 bushes that are compatible
thanks
Nigel

Regret that due to the fire at Powerflex, production has been cutback to just the popular car bushes at the moment. (Think there are a few more Subarus on the road compared to 8's!)
Phoenix are waiting to hear when production is expected to restart for 8's, but, he was very low on any stock before Christmas.
Will let you know when i hear more news.

Hi everyone, new member here.

Bern,

Your mechanic was right, the top (transverse) arms for the rear suspension are BMW parts with non-replaceable inner end bushes. You will have to replace the arm - as I will on my car soon.
Following discussion I understand that Gerry at Phoenix is developing a replacement solution for the front end of the (longitudinal) radius arms - this is the 'dog bone' bush at the connection between the arm and the body. He is hoping to be able to offer bush kits and/or refurbished radius arms at some point once he is happy with the performance.

Clear as mud I think...

Regards

Mark

If anyone looks at this before Gaydon, Gerry from Phoenix will have some exchange trailing arms with poly bushes on view a the show.
