Went down to Dorchester two weeks ago and met a landlord with an imaculate 5 seies unfortuatly the cylinder head and block has gone. He has been quoted 4.5k. I have contacted BMW scrap at Charing and Essex without success. Can anyone help find him a resonable priced engine?

Dave - you have double posted so guess admin will be along to lock one soon as it confuses people - the 2.8 is getting hard to find good ones used as they are either broken or used for engine swaps etc - also a replacement is likely to cost over £500 for a used one then he has to pay to have it removed/fitted etc so a 96 plate E39 is then owes him a lot....if he or a friend is handy with cars they could buy a damaged car and do the trasplant themselves

Try Fab Direct at Gloucester - www.fabdirect.com  They deliver in the south west too.

You sometimes see engines on ebay, but you dont know if they are any good or not!
If in doubt when all else fails - read the instructions!!

Trouble is, good single Vanos 2.8's are getting a bit rare now. You might get one for £350 privately but breakers still charge £700+. Add £400 labour and you're up to the value of a P reg 528i.

Is it a manual or an Auto?

It's not 100%, but I have a perfect 2.5 here.
