BMW Team RBM prepares for Monza – Drivers full of confidence.

  • 18.05.2010
  • Press Release

Munich, 18th May 2010. This weekend sees BMW Team RBM contest rounds five and six of the FIA World Touring Car Championship at Monza (IT). Augusto Farfus (BR) and Andy Priaulx (GB) travel to the “Autodromo Nazionale di Monza” in confident frames of mind.

Farfus returns to the BMW Team RBM as a newly crowned winner of the Nürburgring 24 Hours. Driving a BMW M3 GT2 along with Jörg Müller (DE), Uwe Alzen (DE) and Pedro Lamy (PT), he won last weekend’s race. After an impressive recovery, Priaulx and his co-drivers Dirk Werner (DE), Dirk Müller (DE) and Dirk Adorf (DE) finished seventh. The triple world touring car champion celebrated his first WTCC victory of the season in Marrakesh (MA).

Bart Mampaey (Team Principal):
“The Monza circuit represents a tough challenge for our BMW 320si WTCC cars. We are, however, ready to exploit any opportunity as we did in Marrakesh, where circumstances worked in Andy’s favour. Last weekend our drivers put up strong performances in the Nürburgring 24-hour race, and Augusto celebrated his maiden win in an endurance classic. Meanwhile Andy’s motivation got a boost after his win in Morocco. Our aim is to get both cars into the top eight in race one. From there we will see what happens in the second round.”

Augusto Farfus (Car Number 10):
“Winning the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring has naturally given me tremendous motivation, and I aim to carry that momentum into the World Touring Car Championship. In the series the first races have certainly not run to plan for me. In Monza I am expecting another two difficult races, as the circuit is better suited to the opposition. However, Andy’s victory in Marrakesh proved we need to be prepared to grasp every opportunity of a top placing. We plan to do that in Italy.”

Andy Priaulx (Car Number 11):
“After the 24-hour Race at the Nürburgring the WTCC now heads to yet another classic circuit. It is great that Monza is back on the world championship calendar, for the circuit draws on strong motorsport traditions. Here a good ‘tow’ is usually more important than car set-up. A lot of effort has to be invested in preparing perfectly for slipstreaming. At Monza the leader never has an easy life as the wind resistance affects him more than his challengers. However, in 2006 I was still able to defend my lead to the finish.”

Successful qualifying for BMW Team RBM: Farfus claims pole position, Priaulx is third fastest.

  • 22.05.2010
  • Press Release

Monza, 22nd May 2010. BMW Team RBM enjoyed a successful qualifying for the fifth round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship in Monza (IT). Augusto Farfus (BR) clocked a time of 2:00.672 minutes in the second qualifying session to clinch pole position. Team-mate Andy Priaulx (GB) was just 0.135 seconds slower than the Brazilian and will start from third place on the grid. Chevrolet’s Robert Huff (GB) split the two BMW works drivers. For Farfus, this is the tenth pole position of his WTCC career. The 26-year-old most recently clocked the fastest qualifying time in Brno (CZ) in 2009.

Bart Mampaey (Team Principal):
“That was an extremely exciting qualifying. Our cars were almost ideally positioned at the end of a long chain of other cars, which is always advantageous in Monza. That worked out very well for us in the second qualifying session. Both drivers produced flawless laps. Despite the good grid positions, they will be hard to defend tomorrow. We do not have the top speed on the straights, meaning we are bound to be under pressure right from the word go. However, we can definitely leave here with a good result.”

Augusto Farfus (Car Number 10):
Qualifying 1: 11th, 1:47.616 min – Qualifying 2: 1st, 2:00.672 min.
“We did not necessarily come to Monza expecting it to be a particularly successful weekend. Our first goal was to get both cars safely into the second qualifying session. Now I am on pole and Andy starts from third. That is a fantastic result. We were the last two cars in a large group. I managed to come up with a flawless lap. The slipstream was perfect for me – and that helped produce a lap time like that. I hope the luck stays with me tomorrow, and that we can pick up plenty of points.”

Andy Priaulx (Car Number 11):
Qualifying 1: 12th, 1:47.616 min – Qualifying 2: 3rd, 2:00.807 min.
“We got ourselves in a virtually perfect slipstream in the second qualifying session, which is absolutely crucial on this track with its long straights. My first lap was excellent. A SEAT came off the track in front of me on my second lap, and I was not able to improve on my third lap. I slipped up a bit in the second Lesmo bend, but was able to get the car back under control. Congratulations to the whole team, which has worked hard for this result.”

The fifth round of the 2010 World Touring Car Championship will kick off tomorrow at 13:05hrs local time (12:05hrs BST). Round six will get underway at 15:20hrs (14:20hrs BST).

BMW Team RBM claims one-two in Monza: Priaulx wins, Farfus second.

  • 23.05.2010
  • Press Release

Monza, 23rd May 2010. BMW Team RBM celebrated its maiden one-two in the FIA World Touring Car Championship. Andy Priaulx (GB) won the fifth round of the season in Monza (IT), crossing the line in his BMW 320si WTCC 0.248 seconds ahead of his team-mate, Augusto Farfus (BR), who finished second. It was Priaulx’s second consecutive victory following his triumph in Marrakech (MA) and the 14th victory of his WTCC career. Chevrolet’s Robert Huff (GB) joined the two BMW drivers on the podium by coming third.

In the second race of the day, won by Yvan Muller (FR, Chevrolet), Farfus and Priaulx again managed to increase their points’ tallies, finishing fourth and fifth respectively. In the Drivers’ Championship Priaulx consolidated fourth, having 74 points under his belt. Muller is leading the classification on 100 points. After six rounds Farfus ranks sixth (47 points).

Following a turbulent start, Priaulx and Farfus were third and fourth for a long time in race one, before bad luck struck Tarquini and Huff, who lost their leading positions due to punctures on the final lap. The two BMW works drivers improved to take first and second when they entered the final straight. In race two, the BMW pairing again put in a flawless performance. Both Farfus and Priaulx gained three positions during the race.

Bart Mampaey (Team Principal):
“Following the successful qualifying, which saw us taking first and third on the grid, we knew it would be difficult to defend our positions during race one’s rolling start. In the first chicane Augusto lost the lead, but managed to fight back in great style to fourth. Andy was pushed off the track in the first chicane, but still emerged from the opening lap turmoil in third. Both then both drivers ran like trains behind each other, without making any mistakes. In the frantic final lap both kept their cool, and passed Huff and Tarquini after the green flag was shown. This earned them this one-two. Along with the points scored in race two, this is a fantastic result for us on a track which normally doesn’t suit us.”

Andy Priaulx (Car Number 11):
Race 1: 1st, 2:02.234 min – Race 2: 5th, 2:01.860 min
“Obviously I’m extremely happy after my second consecutive WTCC win. To be honest, I was struggling a bit in race one. But when things started to happen on the last lap, and Augusto and I were in good positions to grab our chances. Of course I feel sorry for Gabriele Tarquini and Robert Huff. However, in the past we have also suffered bad luck on more than one occasion, so we will take this result. I want to dedicate this victory to my grandmother who died on Wednesday. From a sporting point of view this has been a dream weekend.”

Augusto Farfus (Car Number 10):
Race 1: 2nd, 2:02.100 min – Race 2: 4th, 2:02.153 min
“We expected to lose some places at the start of race one. But then I quickly found my rhythm and was able to push hard. The final lap was just crazy, and it’s great that Andy and I successfully managed to make it to the front today. This result is a big boost for BMW and the whole team. Following our win at the Nürburgring 24 Hours a week ago it’s an amazing feeling to be on the podium here in Monza.”

Yes, Bart and the two car BMW RBM team are doing well.

It seems Farfus was a bit miffed  that Andy did not let him win the first race in Monza.

Well done Andy
