So after many weeks of the glove box being difficult to fix, it has finally got me. I closed it on Saturday morning and since then it just will not open again. And yes, I know I should of sorted the problem before it finally jammed.
I got the contents back out today by undoing the two bolts that hold the box to the hinge (should be three but mine only had two left), and pulling stuff out of the back of the box.
So now the glove box hangs by the latch and rattles around but still does not open.

Does anyone know how to get the thing fully open so that I can fit a new latch ?

It can be done !

It does involve a lot of swearing, blood loss and bending bits of the car and hoping like hell it will all bend back again afterwards.

If you are having trouble closing your glovebox, or even a hint it doesn't want to open, replace the latch mechanism before it jams.....

We Had a few problems with the same thing on one of our E30's when Fritz Bitz replaced the dash board. The mechanism gets very dry and then jams closed and if you pull the handle nothing happens. They had to lubricate it and then gently open it.

So we keep ours well lubricated with silicone spray and see if you can get any through the key hole and see if that allows it to open.

I needed a new latch mechanism. The old one had a piece that had cracked and bent, and that stopped the thing opening.
I looked on ebay for new ones, but wasn't sure. So went to Lloyd BMW (who give me 10% club discount on parts), and they supplied me the part for half the price of the ones on ebay.
And yes, both bits of the mechanism got well lub'ed before it all went back in !

Great news. Do all BMW dealers offer that for club discount? I use Cotswolds BMW using the E30zone discount but would be handy to be able to use the local dealer.

No.  It is entirely up to each individual BMW dealership.  I've always found Cotswold BMW very helpful, and they will post items to you which saves a journey.  My local dealer in Oxford will not offer any sort of discount, despite my asking a couple of times...
