right i hope this make sense,i have put a 2.8 m52 from my bent 328 sport into my e39 523(which in fact a 2.8 engine so the ecu is already re mapped),
everything was swapped from the from the oringal engine, sump pick up,mounts and mainfolds,so the bare 2.8 block and head were used.
so difference i noticed was,the crank sensor on the e36 engine is at the back, where on the e39 its at the front(the sensor have different lengths),so the oringal e39 front pulley was fitted in order for the oringal crank sensor set up to be used, the engine is un willing to run,its almost like the inginton timing is out.are the wheel with the crank sensor pick up on the front and back of the crank shaft in different postion for the crank sensor?

or do i just use the rear mounted crank sensor and make up a wire to join it to the exsting plug.

it hasnt stored any fault codes

take it you did not change engine looms - check if any different wires and trace  pins in the plug first (thats the plug for engine loom of each engine)

What are the numbers on the ECU and which ECU are you using - good idea to check all the wires on the ecu connection also to check they are the same - check the ones that differ on a wiring diagram to check use...all the pins are numbered so write down and could become clearer

There's no reason why it shouldn't run unless you've left something off or plugged something in wrong. You need to use the 523i loom, ECU, all the sensors. You are using the older crank sensor and not the newer one? The later one won't work on the original system hence no spark or anything else.
Also check that at TDC (No.1 plug out and piston at the top) the cut out on the crank pulley aligns with the TDC sensor.

A faulty cam sensor would not prevent the engine from running.

andy, been up since 6 checking and re checking everything is in the right place, and i have a 528 which ive been swaping sensor around with, any way when on there on the other 528,it runs fine, the crank sensor on the 328 engine has a pick up from the back of the block, but i have fitted the 523 front pully with crank sensor i do have a spark but it just flooding the engine hence wont fire on more than 2-3 cylinders.
with regards the teeth on the crank pulley, good shout, and it would case all the problems,il have a look into that when i dont feeling like using it as a bbq, although just check though realoem, they only ever made one tooth crank pulley, unless im missing it on there some where.
un less the ring on the back of the crank shaft has the tooth cut out on a different positon to the front, but then surely the front of the crank line up dowl would be in the same place?
either way i made up a wire to connect the rear mounted crank sensor and it didnt spark.but at the time i had readnt your reply about the two system being different
thing that annoys the hell outa me,is this isnt anything new, people swap 2.8 and 2.3 engines and blocks about alot with no issues, and it must be somthing so stupidly simple.

UPDATE
now im not gonna admit this is my fault, but all the evidence points towards me,for some god know what reason i put a rubber o ring on the crank sensor at the front(who knows why),this was causing the sensor to be just a little to far away from the toothed wheel, and hence, wasnt giving the correct signal.the oil ring removed and it started up first time, completely my fault, and my wallet feels the blow for it,
whilst putting the bill away i found out the cars been out of mot since november(ops) so it needs a test today
