    Posted: 25 Sep 2009 at 4:38pm
Hi folks.

I am still waiting to hear from matey at Dover Castle so I propose a visit to Walmer Castle in October or November.

I have spoken to the delightful Denise, the manager there and she has given me the OK for Sunday 25 Oct or Sunday 1 Nov.  After this they are closed for the winter until next year.  And these dates avoid half-term.

Walmer Castle is a Tudor (Henry VIII) coast artillery fort, part of the south-east Henrician forts starting at Sandown in Deal near Sandwich, Deal Castle, Walmer Castle, Archcliffe and Sandgate Castles.  Walmer Castle was occasional home to the Duke of Wellington and to QE the Queen Mother, (although not at the same time !)

The admission is FREE on the condition that each driver buys a castle guidebook.  These are £3.99.  Normal admission price is £6.30 a head, so to make the most of this generous offer it is a benefit for 2 to occupy a car.

Denise has said that parking for this type of event is usually on the gravel drive by the main pedestrian entrance so there will be good exposure for the club.

Please let me know if anyone is interested.  I propose a start at Broad Oak Canterbury for a discount parts buy, a look round the showroom then a scenic drive to the beautiful grounds of Walmer Castle.

Discuss !

Hi Jeff,

Both dates are ok for us. By the way on the last Pub meeting no one knew in detail about this event, we should promote it more to gather more people.

Cheers,
Bela

Latest event update from Jeff:

Hi.

Hopefully we'll have a decent number next Sunday - might even recruit some more on Saturday too.

Re times - I thought we could meet at the showroom at 1030 (opens at 10) have tea, coffee, cakes etc, look round, leave at 1130. I shall plot a nice scenic route (about an hour?) to Walmer so should get there in time for loo/lunch/tea and buns/whatever - they close at 4 I think.

All.

Have spoken to English Heritage now.

The above itinerary is fine.  Their catering people are going to ring me to give me an idea of numbers - as this is their last day of operation until the spring they would like an idea of who wants what.  I am guessing we will all want tea/coffee/cake etc.  If I know more when they ring me I will let you know.

I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday and most of you on Saturday night !

Regards.

Hi all.

Here's More !

I have just spoken to the catering manager at Walmer.  This Sunday is the last day the Castle is open until the spring.  Because of this the catering chap doesn't want to get in loads of stuff (just for us!) if we're not going to eat it - on the other hand he does want to meet our expectations.

I think the tea/coffee/cake scenario is OK - they just need an idea of whether anyone will want proper lunch.  They will have proper cooked food, soup etc, it's just a matter of how much they need to have.

If you could let me know if you require lunch that would be great.

Thanks again !

Just popped on to say thanks, myself and the wife had a great day, (although she manages to find the most expensive car in any showroom by instict alone..the 630 at about £65k!!!)

Thanks to Jeff for putting up with us and a really big thanks to the guy with the 528 in grey, (sorry, i'm terrible with names!) who tried in vain to keep the "tail end charlie" in his rear view mirror!!

Sorry we didnt stick around too long but the wife was getting tired. And as she's carrying our first little'un i pander to every whim....
