I get asked many questions about oil so I thought a thread here for all oil related questions would be a good idea and build into a FAQ or reference point for others.

So, put your oil questions here but please give the following information if you would like a recommendation:

Make
Model
Year
Engine size/type

Any mods

Type of use (road/track)

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used)

What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc?

I hope this will help and become a useful thread

 Hello mate,

I've recently bought an e30 m3 and want to change the engine oil. As this is my first bmw i'm not sure which oil to use. Its standard apart from the stainless pipe and will only be used for the road.

 year 1988
 engine 2.3

 Thanks

Tab,

What kind of mileage is it at?

We find a good 5w-40 synthetic changed every 8-10,000 miles or once a year is ideal.

Cheers

Hello Guy,

Like Tab, I have a 1988 Evo2 E30 M3, 2.3l which I recently bought. It has only 22,000km on the clock and will be used on the road.

This is my third Evo2 and I have always used Castrol Magnatec 10W 40 oil but the previous owner who had it for 10 years and 3000km has used BMWs own SAE 0W-40 oil, it says Quality Longlife-04 and ACEA A3/B4/C3 on the bottle.

I have concerns about leaving this in, as I have never heard of an E30 M3 running with 0W-40, it always seems to be 5W-40 or 10W-40 recommended, but as the engine is still so relatively new and tight do you think it would be OK?

I anticipate doing no more than 2-3000 miles per year.

If you don't think the 0W-40 is a good idea can you explain why not and is there a particular make you would recommend.

Many thanks

0w-40 is fine, there is no reason why it should not be, just becuase they werent around when the engine was designed does not mean they are not suitable, in the UK there is very little difference between 5w and 0w.

Nice one, would have replied earlier but things have been hectic. A friend of mine recommended i check out the Castrol website, which i did and found they can also advise on which oil is best for your motor.

 Thanks

Hi Guy,
Got E34 m5 3.6. 1991. It is high mileage but has had lots of engine work done and runs very well with good oil pressure and low emmissions. The car will be used mainly for trackdays so will get used very infrequently but will be very hard when used.

it has semisynthetic 5w 40 in now (I think).

Can you recommend an oil for this and if driven very hard all the time how often should I change this.

Also. Castrol R two stroke.   The smell of this stuff was fantastic when i was a kid. Can you still get the stuff or is there any other oil that smells the same ?

5w-40 is ideal, synthetic. If you are going top be using the car hard then go for an ester based one for best protection such as the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-1146-silkolene-pro-s-5w-40-ester-synthetic-oil-for-high-performance-engines.aspx
We dont do Castrol R but we do have the Silkolene Castorene R40 http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-776-silkolene-castorene-r40-castor-based-engine-oil.aspx To get that smel we all love put a cup full of this into the fuel tank.

Cheers

Hi

I've acquired an E36 2.5 TDS with 150k on clock. I used to have one previously and this gave me alot of grief by 'over-revving'.

I tend to change my oil hot and have previously used 5-40 Morris Oil fully syn. What would you recommend - only used as road use?

As I had problems with one before and this is my first oil change on this model I'm tempted to put an engine flush in (clear turbo, maybe), what do you think?

Would you add any other after market products?

Cheers, Anthony

5w-40 is ideal, Morris is ok but keep it to regular changes to keep the oil fresh.

No need for a flush, they can do more harm then good so we suggest regular changes with quality oil, this will keep it as clean as it needs to be.

Cheers

Hi Guy

Thanks for prompt response. If not Morris what other brand would you suggest? 5W-40 is generally dear and the TDS takes nearly 6.5 litres, so happy to have quality to keep the car in working order?

Cheers, Anthony

Guy - I changed the oil in my 1988 635 CSi just over a year ago and, on your recommendation, used Silkolene Pro S 5W-40. The car is stored through the winter months and annual mileage varies from next to nothing to around 1000 (as has been the case this summer). Should I change the oil before laying it up or will it be OK for a while longer?

For the 850 I would go with a good 5w-40 synthetic for all year round use, loads of BMW approved ones here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

thanks guy
what are your opinions on changing auto box oil and diff oil on 850 1991 with 52000 miles. I have been told by BMW tekkies that it is unadvisable because new oil would put extra stress on components.
cheers

If you want the best then an ester based 5w-40 is ideal, they really help to look after the double vanos unit and keep it quiet.

Have a look at the Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300v, Redline and Gulf Comp here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Hi

I think one of the service packs will be best for you as it gives you a good value everyday oil and a filter, plus an oil top up if you need it.

Use the code XMASPACK and it knocks of 15%.
