I am just starting to plan out in more detail our late summer motoring/boating holiday.
I stumbled across a place that hires cruisers/sailing boats on the Douro in Portugal,so that's a week sorted!
We are using the long, read expensive, crossing from Portsmouth/Santander both ways, but would welcome advice regarding 2/3 star type hotel chains in Spain/Portugal.We have previously used Parador's whilst in Spain, but they are now very expensive so I am looking for better value.I need to cover 5 nights, three before boating and two after.

I guess you're sailing with Brittany Ferries. If you book the hotels through them as well as the crossing, you get a fair wack of saving, they class it as a holiday booking. I've booked 4 nights at various hotels before and ended up paying less than the crossing on its own. Check out their website for hotels (I've not found a duffer with them before) but then phone for a price, as the on line booking can't handle multiple venues. Otherwise try Booking.com I've just booked up 5 hotel stops at reasonable prices, though with the Euro close to on par with the £, all hotels look expensive this year. (Hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs)
Don't know what route you are planning through Spain, but Avila (NW of Madrid) is fabulous and just right for a stop off. I'm staying in Begur this year so driving through France but done the Santander trip several times. Don't you just love the Bay of BiscayDead

Have used Booking.com--you get a fair choice of rates/standards--on the 30+ passes Euro tour I did with Mike Fishwick---I will try and get a Portugese answer of our equal budget stops in the good locations-.You could also try Our Clubs sponsors Crowne Plaza 30% + off---some very good deals--
