hello everyone
i would like some opinions/help on changing the gearbox oil on my 840 sport as its got 114k on it although its fine changing when it should etc.went to local bm dealer who said no problem 40 mins and 3 litres will do the box great i thought, rang up independent who said 8 litres but not including torque converter as gearbox has to dropped and some have give up the ghost when its been changed i.e not broke dont fix.so is it worth just doing the box with 3 litres or should it have 8.any thoughts.
many thanks

I'm no expert but I would be surprised if changing the oil would be the reason it expires......

Think about what you can do for the club, not what it can do for you...

Hi Martin
I would recomend any auto box over 100k have its oil and filter changed. It is not mileage that damages auto boxes, it is heat. If the filter is blocked, the oil wont flow very well and will get a lot hotter which will ruin the clutches.
It is not necessary to remove the box, therefore the torque converter is not touched; the sump is dropped and the filter removed through the sump opening. The CORRECT oil is expensive and i think mine took 7 litres to refill. The refil is very awkward and time consumimg, really needing a low power pump to help get it into the filler, all while the engine is running and hot!
Several 7 series owners have actually taken their cars to ZF in Germany who not only change the oil and filter, but also the valve assy, with costings about £300 plus travel cost. Not sure if the newly opened ZF facilities in the UK now offer the same.
I would not trust this job to any garage who has not had experience doing this job. Also, any premature wear of the clutches will be seen when the oil is drained and the filter checked. Auto oil/filter changes then every 50k.
Drive a BMW and you will have a smile on your face every time (and- drive twice as far as you need to !!)
