120d Auto
17" Run Flats with Sport Suspension.
My 6 month old 1 series has needed all tyres replacing after 19,000 miles, with punctures this means I am on my 9th tyre. With slightly wider tyres on the rear the cost is between £160 and £200 a time.
I was planning a trip to the Nurburgring in the Spring but feel the tyre wear will be costly.
I would be interested to hear what mileage other owners with 17" wheels are getting.
Regards,
Richard

Richard,
Our 120d sport is also running on 17" wheels. The Bridgestone Re050 tyres have lasted just over 30.000 miles (mostly motorway) although this included 3 laps of the Ring during the last factory tour - June 2005. This did not do the fronts much good, though I would not have missed it.
I have also picked up a set of 16" wheels/tyres but the car does not have anywhere near the same grip when pushing on, but sometimes its good to slide a little!
I would go for the Ring trip and make sure you cool the car and tyres after each lap, or have a look on ebay for a cheap set and just enjoy the 120d for the great little car that it is.

Hi,
Thanks for your note, most interesting.
My 20k miles was also done on motorways but they were the original Pirelli's, I now have Bridgetones which handle far better and hope they will last 30k like yours in order to justify the the extra cost.
I agree I think the 120d is an amazing handling car and holds the road fantasticly! The chassis could easily handle another 150bhp, just wish BMW would bring out a 130d.

Hi Richard,
Same Car, wheels and tyres. Like you I got only 19,000 miles from my Pirellis. Replaced with same a couple of months ago. Will see if they need replacing after similar mileage. If so will consider dwebster's choice of Bridgestones.
Most of my mileage is 50-mile runs on A-roads with roundabouts about every 6-miles. So loads of spurts of rapid acceleration.....would probably be hard going for any tyre ![]() Edited by MalcolmZ - 12 Dec 2009 at 9:44am |
