Hi folks. as a new E30 owner, I am a little unsure of the best oil to use for my 1987 325i. I have obviously checked the old manual, but times have changed and oils certainly have since the guidance was printed. I'm guessing a 10w40 semi synthetic, but you might know of a better option.

Personally for the cost I would use castrol saw it at good value today at Asda
If you check www.castrol.co.uk and input your reg no it will suggest I suspect the new gtx they do as part synth nd also magnatec semi syn for the cost I err to the better oil if a decent engine depending on use However I suspect but don't know that halfords will have had it made by a decent company and if high mileage for the m20 engine you should be okay if you want to save your pennies Cheers |

Running three cars,I buy engine oil in 25 litre drums!
I use a 10w/40 supplied by Witham Oil and Grease, who are local to me.I think the last drum was about £50.

I have used Halfords oils for many years without any problems. All their oils are made by Comma, and are also marketed as Esso and some Shell Helix products.
Up until last year i used to buy their oil very cheap on trade, until i found that the costs started going up beyond the price of my local motor factor for no real reason. Now i can buy 5L of Comma oil from the motor factor for £11 and a filter for less than £3. So the actual manufacturer of the oil sells cheaper than Halfords, even with retail offers and trade discounts. I only use halfords now for bulbs as on trade they are less that £1 and for the convenience, its ok. For everything else, motor factors are much better and cheaper. |

Hi guys, I'm getting used to all the forum sites now. Checking out the Opie forum it seems that Magnatec 10W40 covers most of the BMW range including my Mrs Z3, Think I'll try for a drum of the stuff.

Popped in to Halfords today, 10W40 Part Synthetic is £16.99 on offer. Motor Factors, £11 or £13 for Comma and £14 for Magnatec. Bear in mind Halfords and Comma are 5L and Castol containers are usually 4L

Fuchs do a good range also. Worth looking at these. I have used 10W 40 Semi Synthetic and 5W 30 Semi Synthetics in the past. 320i is on 5W 30 at the moment and 327i is on 10W 40. Hope this helps.. |
