BMW’s home event opens final third of the FIA WTCC season.

  • 31.08.2009
  • Press Release
Munich, 31st August 2009. The FIA World Touring Car Championship’s summer break ends next weekend when the BMW national teams fight for victories and world championship points at Oschersleben (DE). After five wins in the last seven races, BMW intends making up ground on home soil in both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships before heading for the final European rounds in Imola (IT) and the two flyaway events which will bring the series to a close.

Both BMW and SEAT carry the same compensation weight for Oschersleben, namely 40 kilograms of ballast per car. However, BMW Team Italy-Spain’s Alessandro Zanardi (IT), whose BMW 320si WTCC is fitted with a sequential gearbox, goes into the race without carrying ballast. BMW Team UK driver Andy Priaulx (GB), plus BMW Team Germany’s Augusto Farfus (BR) and Jörg Müller (DE), have all won at Oschersleben, while Sergio Hernández (ES) makes his debut for BMW Team Italy-Spain in the Magdeburger Börde region.

Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK):
“My feelings of Oschersleben are always of standing on the podium with Alex Zanardi following his first win after his return to motorsport. I feel that I have the speed to start the rest of the season on a high, we have tested hard during the break and I want to pay back the team for all their hard work.”

Jörg Müller (BMW Team Germany):
“I always look forward to returning to Oschersleben. It is our only event in Germany, and is thus a special one for me. BMW is a German company, I carry the German flag – it couldn’t be more homely. Plus, BMW has always been competitive here.”

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team Germany):
“At last the break is over. I can’t wait to race again. I won in Oschersleben in 2007 and 2008, and feel in top form for this event, so am intrigued by what the weekend will bring. My aim is to increase the pressure on the drivers at the top of the championship points table.”

Alessandro Zanardi (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“We all know the circuit at Oschersleben well. I have won there, but last year I experienced an extremely disappointing weekend. Hopefully this year the good moments will return. The circuit has a lot of interesting, medium speed corners. However, the straights are very short.”

Sergio Hernández (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“I enjoy Oschersleben. Last year I scored two points here by finishing seventh – in a privately-entered BMW. I am looking forward to seeing whether the balance of power has shifted after the long break.”

History and background:

BMW drivers have celebrated numerous Worlds Touring Car Championship successes at the “Motorsport Arena Oschersleben”. Seven of the eight races held to date at the 3.696-kilometre circuit have fallen to a BMW driver. Alessandro Zanardi entered the history books when he took his maiden WTCC victory here in 2005. Augusto Farfus and Andy Priaulx have each taken two victories to date at the Magdeburger Börde region, while Jörg Müller stood on the top step of the podium in 2006.

The sinuous circuit has long been included on FIA Touring Car Championship calendars. The European Championship featured six races here between 2002 and 2004. BMW claimed an impressive five victories during that period, with Priaulx scoring two and Müller one.

The “Motorsport Arena” is a level circuit and offers a good mix of slow corners – in which traction is of paramount importance – and flowing sections. A key feature is the chicane on the back straight, where cars need to be able to ride the kerbs without losing time. In terms of average speed, Oschersleben is classified in the middle of the 12 circuits making up the 2009 WTCC calendar.

The circuit is one of Germany’s youngest and most modern motorsport venues. It was originally opened on 25th July 1997 as “MOTOPARK Oschersleben”, and renamed “Motorsport Arena Oschersleben” in August 2005.

Beside the circuit, which hosts both car and motorcycle events, the “Motorsport Arena” also features a modern kart track. Various German kart championships are contested on this outdoor circuit.

Oschersleben numbers 17,000 inhabitants and lies 35 kilometres from Magdeburg. Berlin is situated approximately 150 kilometres to the north-east.

This year the promoters of the event have laid on a special treat for fans: A concert featuring various popular musicians such as Sarah Connor, Reamonn and Milow is scheduled for 18 00 on Saturday evening. The WTCC entry tickets include admission to the concert in the StarArena.

BMW Team Germany has every reason to party even before the race weekend starts: Team-mates Jörg Müller and Augusto Farfus both celebrate their birthdays on the Thursday. Müller turns 40, and Farfus 26.

Both races will be contested over 14 laps, providing a race distance of 51.74 kilometres. The first heat starts at 12:50hrs (11:50hrs BST), and race 2 at 15:05hrs (14:05hrs BST).

Weather gamble in Oschersleben: Three BMW drivers in the top-ten.

  • 05.09.2009
  • Press Release

Oschersleben, 5th September 2009. Changeable weather conditions turned qualifying for round 17 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship in Oschersleben (DE) into a tyre lottery. In the second part of the session the BMW national team drivers opted for wet tyres. However, the track dried out faster than expected. BMW Team Germany’s Jörg Müller (DE) was the best-placed BMW driver and had to make do with eighth after setting a lap time of 1:46.249 minutes.

His team-mate, Augusto Farfus (BR), finished ninth in the decisive knockout qualifying session. Alessandro Zanardi (IT) of BMW Team Italy-Spain came tenth and will join the 26-year-old on the fifth row of the grid for the first race on Sunday. SEAT’s Gabriele Tarquini (IT) secured pole position. He was among the drivers who set their best times on dry tyres in the final stage of “Q2”.

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen commented: “We have seen an exciting qualifying session with changeable weather conditions. In the second half of phase two of qualifying the circuit gradually dried out. As our cars went out on wet tyres and at the end did not have enough time to switch back to slicks, our three drivers only managed to claim eighth, ninth and tenth on the grid.”

At the start of qualifying the skies above Oschersleben produced a down pour. Müller and Farfus went into the second phase by finishing third and fourth respectively. Zanardi also managed to advance into “Q2” after clocking the tenth-fastest lap time. His team-mate Sergio Hernández (ES) and BMW Team UK’s Andy Priaulx (GB), however, were eliminated after coming 11th and 15th. As the rain got worse with 12 minutes to go, neither of the two drivers had enough time to improve their lap times. Some more famous names walked away from this “weather gamble” empty-handed: Among them championship leader, Yvan Muller (FR/SEAT), was kicked out of the fight for pole position by finishing 17th.

In the second part the remaining three BMW drivers went out early on wet tyres. However, as the session evolved, all the drivers who had switched to dry tyres proved to have an advantage on the drying track. As a result, the BMW trio dropped back down the timesheets as their competitors improved in the dying moments of the 10-minute session. “Obviously I’m disappointed,” said local hero Müller. “We topped the timesheets in free practice, so our car is far better than reflected now by our grid positions. Now I’m in the middle of the pack at the start of race one. I hope to survive the first corner, which is extremely tight.”

Priaulx and Farfus win for BMW in German WTCC home races.

  • 06.09.2009
  • Press Release

Oschersleben, 6th September 2009. Augusto Farfus (BR) moved up to second in the drivers’ standings of the FIA World Touring Car Championship after winning the 18th round of the season on BMW’s home soil in Oschersleben (DE). The BMW Team Germany driver claimed victory ahead of BMW Team UK’s Andy Priaulx (GB) and SEAT driver Gabriele Tarquini (IT). This was Farfus’ fourth win of the season and the 13th victory in his WTCC career.

In the first race of the day, it was Priaulx who took the chequered flag as winner in the “Motorsport Arena Oschersleben”. The triple world champion won after starting from 14th on the grid, relegating Tarquini and Rickard Rydell (SE/SEAT) to second and third respectively. With a total of 18 points the driver from Guernsey scored his best result of the year. In addition, Priaulx is the first driver in the history of the series since 2005 to claim victory after starting outside the top-ten. In the second race, Farfus’ team-mate, Jörg Müller (DE), and Sergio Hernández (ES) of BMW Team Italy-Spain were also able to improve their points’ tallies. Müller executed a sensational fight back from 23rd, crossing the line in fourth. Hernández was fifth after 14 laps after taking eighth in race one, following a post-race penalty for Chevrolet’s Nicola Larini (IT).

Farfus now has 90 points under his belt, so is second in the Drivers’ Championship, just one point behind Tarquini. Reigning champion, Yvan Muller (FR/SEAT), follows in third with 84 points. In the manufacturers’ classification BMW has scored 234 points to date, shortening the gap to SEAT to one point as well.

As expected, the first chicane turned out to be a dangerous place to be after the start of race one, as several drivers had accidents in this tight section so spoilt their chances of good results. Among them were local hero, Müller, and BMW Team Italy-Spain’s Alessandro Zanardi (IT). While Müller had to retire with a broken suspension and a damaged radiator following a collision, Zanardi was at least able to finish the race in 17th.

Priaulx, however, emerged without a scratch from the first chicane, after making an excellent start which saw him improve from 14th to fifth. On the following laps the Englishman gained further ground thanks to impressive overtaking manoeuvres and finally took the lead from Tarquini on lap six, which he kept until the end. After 14 laps he crossed the line 3.939 seconds ahead of the Italian.

Farfus dropped from eighth to 13th at the start, but just like Priaulx was able to fight his way up over the course of the race. On the final lap the Brazilian improved to sixth. Due to Larinis’s penalty he was classified fifth, collecting four championship points. Hernández also celebrated a a points’ finish and claimed eighth in the classification.

In race two the BMW drivers provided the fans with plenty of action. Farfus stayed in third at the start, but managed to pass Wiechers driver Stefano D’Aste (IT/BMW) for second on the lap two. Two laps later he took the lead away from Engstler. Priaulx moved up several places at the start and then also overtook Engstler on lap five. For the remainder of the race, Farfus and Priaulx remained close to each other, before the former took the chequered flag 0.644 seconds ahead of his fellow BMW driver. Hernández fought his way up the ranks from ninth to fifth, while Zanardi retired on the very first lap.

Müller displayed his usual fighting spirit: From 23rd on the grid he literally ploughed through the field – just like Priaulx in the first race. On lap six, Müller was running in the top eight for the first time. But this was not the end of his spectacular fight back. On lap 11 he passed Hernández as well, securing a fourth-place finish at this home event.

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen:
“After a difficult qualifying session this arguably was a nearly perfect Sunday for us. Thanks to two victories we are in the middle of the title fight. Jörg’s drive from 23rd to fourth also was extremely impressive. Our experience from the past year’s told us that Oschersleben’s track layout is almost perfect for our cars. But still it’s no easy matter to claim two victories in such a competitive field.”

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team Germany):
“This victory is a perfect birthday present for me. We knew that this track would suit our car well. But the disappointing qualifying session made things a bit more complicated for us. Therefore I’m really happy that I could was able to score my third consecutive win here in Oschersleben. After race one my car was badly damaged. The team did a great job, so I was able to push hard in the second race.”

Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK):
“It’s been a while since I last made it to the top step of the podium. I has almost happened in many races since Pau 2008, but never worked out. Now it feels great to be there again. In the first corner I decided not to panic. It was all about keeping out of the trouble, which worked out quite well for me. Then I improved lap by lap. The car was just great. My goal for the remainder of the season is to score as many wins as possible. This one was a nice start.”

Jörg Müller (BMW Team Germany):
“Following the bad luck I experienced in race one, I fought tremendously hard in the second – and this was extremely enjoyable. I’m happy with fourth, although I should have been able to claim a much better result, if only the first-corner incident hadn’t happened.”

Alessandro Zanardi (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“After a good start I got turned round in the first corner. I don’t blame anyone for this, as this is racing. To leave Germany empty-handed, is a big disappointment for me. But now my home event in Imola is next on the calendar. And I’m fired up to be back in the fast lane there.”

Sergio Hernández (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“It was my goal to score some points, and that’s exactly what I did. In addition, I was able to learn some interesting things when I was following Jörg in race two. That’s why I’m quite happy with my race weekend.”
