The question of classic status for the Z3 obviously raises the question of whether the Z4 or perhaps the Z4M would ever be considered a classic. Somehow I think not but in a number of ways the Z4 is better than the Z3.
Try applying the scoring( from the previous thread) to the Z4 and see what the conclusion is.

Phil,
How many light years do YOU think it will take for a Z4MC to be accepted as a Classic??????????
![]() For the Real thing one doesnt even have to say its model designation, its JUST--"M COUPE"--classic or What???

Thats why I started a separate thread as idea of the Z4M Roadster or Coupe being a classic is so remote, at this moment in time, that I didnt want to detract from the other thread.

Phil agreed is remote at this time but as Ron has said on other thread have to look to the future....not meaning to knock the Z3 lads but the Z4 shares many of the same attributes for classic status apart from not being as old....the Z1 however was a classic as soon as it went into production as a measure the other way

I perosnally think the zeds have got less attractive as the number has got higher, the zed 1 is pretty much a perfect wedge and the zed 3 three is just a retro fest of curves but the zed 4 with Mr Bangles anges was pretty much the first of the genre in a look that has taken over the the BMW range and has had such an influence of other manufacturers.
So even if it is not that pretty to the eye it is probably more influential than the others, which will probably assure its place as a classic in a few years time....... or the bloody thing that started it all...... you choose

the Z3 whether carrying an M badge or not is 'just another car' and will no doubt become a classic in years to come in the same way as the austin allegro
BMW has in many ways sold itself to the 'masses' thus only select newer models will reach true classic status and I cannot see the X6 doing any better than the Z4.

Steve...I saw an X6 the other day and I was more interested in what person would buy one...no offence to anyone who has one
On the subject of the oh so loved Allegro...a year or so back at the Knebworth car show the Allegro Owners Club was located next the our BMWCC display....got to say it was interesting to see them in all the the varients....to be fair that is the beauty also of a classic...not just speed and value....not that I have owned or aspire to own an Austin....apart from a 6R4

I don't know how the Austin Agro arrived on this thread, and how it ever reached classic status. Those of us who remember it littering our roads will know what I mean.It should not be mentioned in the same breath as a BM,British or not.

BJ - it had been used as an example that all sorts of cars become 'classic' for different reasons...whether you think the design was good or bad....the Honkro was an unfortunate error by BL as the original design was years previous and would then have been well before its time, but when released was when BL was going through a tricky time.
The Z3 and Z4 as Steve and Phil have said will become classic in time but they are a mass produced car.....as per other threads if you love your car that should be good enough....hopefully thats ok for most...time will tell

Cabrio. The Allegro was ,in fact, quite a striking design for its time, but apart from the aesthetics it was terrible.I can remember it was recalled at one time because the steering arm had a habit of dropping off.No doubt with 21st century technology applied, anything could be made a classic.Even the E type had its failings until Heritage re-built it with up-to-date technology, but the original is undoubtably a classic car.It was claimed to do 150 mph,but history does not record how many were killed trying to prove it could.

Actually I dont think the Z4 will ever be a classic. It is not particularly popular and although it drives well the styling is not to most peoples taste.
It is a fine car but I fear will never be considered a classic.

I don't like the Z4 or any Bangle designs at all. The lines seem to be wrong they go up and down they don't flow. The last "BMW" was the E46. |

Never mind all the 'Prestige Badge' stuff etc - you don't need a 'Prestige Badge' - look at the Escort Mexico and Cooper S brigades. The basic requirement for a Classic Car is that it arouses the enthusiasm of its owners - the E30 being a perfect example.
We all know that the Z3 has this quality, but until we see evidence of Z4 owners regarding their car as something more than transport it will linger in the borderland of classicism. |

Ron.I agree about the Bangle designs. They lack imagination, and are rapidly reaching the point where they offend the eye.Barges come to mind.
BMW desperately need to break away from this ugly trend and produce something special, perhaps on the lines of the CS concept.Bring the headlights to the front of the car where they belong, instead of trying to combine them with sidelights.I find that with radically slanted lights I get blinded when going in the opposite direction. This is because light is leaking out of the sides. It has been the fashion to do this, and IMO they should be scrapped. The lights are just one aspect that needs a rethink. |

Lads! Lads! I am deeply offended
. I love my Zed 4, think it aggresive looking, stylish and particularly like the "nice car mate" comments i get in the street - usually from some urchin just waiting to slash the soft top, I'll admit - Richard Hammond likes them and so does Vicki Butler Henderson and thats good enough for me.....
Future classic? Absolutely!!

Hi Steve
Welcome to the forum !! I see you have found the Z section.I was going to suggest you ask Phil your question you earlier posted - but- dont think Z4's may be his favourite !!! What part of the country are you located ? there may be local meets around you. |

Hi Bern
I live on the Isle of Wight, though at the moment I'm working offshore in the Arabian Gulf (sounds exotic but trust me, it isn't!).
Haven't been a BMW owner for that long so only now starting to get involved with the club.
Hope all these Z3'ers understand that any beemer is better than none, even if it is only a Z4
!!Best regards

I would make a guess that in about ten years the Z4 will become sought after, but only in dark colours, which transform its appearance.
Most of them are in fairly anaemic silvers and beiges, but when one sees a black or dark blue Z4 it looks like a different car - the dented sides are not so obvious, and the wide gap between bonnet and front apron is no longer noticed.
Another colour which looks good is Hell Rot 2 - the orangey-red shade used on the Z3, and also on the Alpina 3.2 version of the Z4. This car, with its leather interior and headlamp eyebrows, is a startling glimpse of what could - and should - have been.
